"To a Daughter Leaving Home" is about a mother who is sending her child away; however, the mother indulges in reminiscence and recalls when her daughter is eight years old. When readers fully understand what the poet is trying to say through her poem, every hearts of the readers are touched. To mothers, even a grown-up child is a kid to look after. Korean high school students in the period of contrariness will face a turning point to go back to the arms of their parents reading this poem.
Korean students only focus on College Scholastic Ability Test - even the subjects learnt in school is focused on CSAT; thus, giving a chance to spread their creativity is urgent. "To a Daughter Leaving Home" is perfect to be creative. This poem contains metaphors which can be translated into different meanings. For example, the word ‘distance’ in "more breakable/ with distance" shows that the daughter is gradually moving away from her mother which increases the possibility of being broken. The subject of getting broken can be both bones when the daughter was young and the new society the grown-up daughter will face. Reading this requires readers to think.
For hostile and tight-laced Korean students, "To a Daughter Leaving Home" will give them a chance to re-embrace their parents and think outside the box. A change in curriculum is a must. Hopefully students will be able to feel free to think and learn subjects not only related to CSAT but also that are of their interest.
Do you think reading poetry helps develop creativity? I will have to read more poetry then.
