Haram Sung’s, John Jung’s, and Daewoong Chung’s blog posts all chose “To a Daughter Leaving Home” as the best literature out of the four. They all picked the same poem but had different reasons on why they picked the poem.
Sung states that students should “learn how to construct a sentence [...] or even a piece of writing” through poems. He agrees that students may find poems challenging. However, he believes that some challenge is needed to learn a language - talking about Krashen’s i+1. Sung goes on and introduces another reason. He says that “To a Daughter Leaving Home” has appropriate message and that it is “empathetic”. Empathy inspires and allows students to concentrate and learn.
According to Jung, “To a Daughter Leaving Home” is useful to enhance student’s characteristics. Because student have not yet become a parent, Jung says that it is “crucial” to have students realize what their parents think when it comes for them. In addition, he states that this poem is “easy to activate their schema” because most students have experienced love from their parents.
As reported by Chung, this poem is recommendable because of “its empathetic benefits and appropriateness in language”. The first reason is the same as Jung’s second reason. He says that teens forget about the love that has been given to them from their parents. This poem gives them a “chance” to bring back their memory. According to Chung, “To a Daughter Leaving Home” is suitable for high school students because it contains some “essential prefabricated expressions” and “general level of vocabulary”.
Same poem was chosen by the three above, but they, although some do overlap, all had different reasons on why they support it. It’s quite interesting how the same topic can diverge into different ideas. This can also mean that some people may disagree on choosing “To a Daughter Leaving Home” as the best literature to teach to Korean high school students. It is important to be exposed to different types of literature before teachers teach. The more exposure the more ideas teacher gets.
